We had a tornado watch!

January 25th, 2008 at 06:42 pm

The word "tornado" and southern California do not go hand-in-hand. But the wintery weather here has changed things a bit. It has been raining buckets here over the last few days with more to come this weekend. We were watching TV about 5 pm last night when the emergency system voice came over our programming. There was a tornado watch for the coastal communities and that a waterspout had been observed in the area. The watch would be over at 5:45 pm. "He" also stated that if additional warnings occur, that we should take shelter in a basement! Hee hee! I personally do not know anyone in this area that has a basement. Most homes are on a slab foundation. Some older (50+ years usually) home might be on a raised foundation (no room for a basement). The only place I think we could go would be in our closet! Luckily, nothing came of the watch. But I think that I had better get all our emergency supplies in one area and make sure anything perishable is not expired. I have lived through a few earthquakes here but at least tornados can be seen. Hmm... I am not in Kansas anymore......

Tornado is like hurricanes here in FL, be safe

Yeah, I've been through 2 hurricanes in my life. That was enough. Though also having lived in Oklahoma for 15 years, I prefer the predictability and lack of concentrated destruction of a hurricane. Of course considering Katrina, I will try and never get involved with either.

I heard about the tornado watch yesterday. It is funny that most people hear that and think whatever, but through in alittle rain and it's top story in the news.

    LOL. The basement? LOL.

We live out by Sacramento Airport and we have had a few tornados after living here 6 years. I wouldn't be worried about a large tornado (they were babies) as far as life and limb, but they did do a lot of damage. But no one told this was tornado country. Of course everyone says there were never tornados up here before. I think just no one saw them before, it used to just be farmland until about the time we moved up. Then again, the airport was always out here.

Anyway, whenever it gets really stormy we get tornado warnings. It's just bizarre.

I would assume it is 10 times more bizarre in So Cal. How weird!!!!!

I just had to laugh though, can't imagine anyone here having a basement either.

P.S. My parents live in san jose and the story was a tornado demolished a few houses in the neighborhood in the 70s. They can pop up anywhere I guess. (Today I wonder if it was like the baby ones that damaged a few homes pretty minorly here. Probably. Just so rare people get excited about it. & then exaggerate with time. Would be worth it to look up old records I guess to see how bad it really was).

My family is from Kansas. Talk about tornados!

I grew up in WI. We used to get a couple of tornado warnings every summer. The weird thing is that the tornado would pop up on the outskirts of the apocalyptic thunderstorm, not in the midst of it. We had a basement and root cellar that was sometimes so nasty that I would have been willing to brave the tornado. (I was a teenager then and out of my mind. Big Grin)
